RC Car Action: Who designed the Area 51 chassis you used to
win the Nats?
Joey Floyd: Anthony “Heavy” Hinton, another member of SERCRC,
made the chassis and links for me. It is a copy of his rig.
RCCA: What are the most important parts of your setup?
JF: The most important part of my truck are the high clearance links
and cantilevers. The links provide a lot of clearance for the chassis, and
the cantilevers allow the chassis to still sit low and maintain a low center of gravity.
RCCA: Do you have any more hop-ups or changes in store for
JF: I recently upgraded to LiPo batteries and a new voltage regulator,
so no major changes are planned at this time. The steering setup is the
only thing that I’d like to improve on at this point.
RCCA: How important is it to have the high-tech setup with the
JF: I believe the stick radios such as the DX6 are a huge advantage if
you can get comfortable using them. I have several mixes in the radio
that allow for both axles to work together, and I have the ability to “dig”
the front or rear axles. This allows the truck to turn very tightly and help
set up for the next section on the course. Another advantage of the
stick radios is that I have full proportional steering front and rear. On a
regular 3-channel radio, the rear steer is usually all or nothing; with my
DX6, I can steer the rear tires any amount.
RCCA: What were expectations going into this competition?
JF: Expectations … I figured I’d do well in the Super class since I did OK
at the ’06 Nationals with my TXT. Since I had a more capable truck this
year, I expected to do better than I did last year. I never dreamed that I
would actually win. I wasn’t expecting to do as well as I did in the 2.2
class; I attribute a lot of that to the GC1 chassis I was running.
The Nationals was the first competition I ever drove it at, and I placed third. JOEY FLOYD’S

JF: When I made the finals on Hometown: Brierfield, AL

after my run, I walked
