THROWING AXLES
Q
I like to do big jumps with my XTM truck because it’s so tough and can handle almost anything. But when I set up the shocks with lots of clearance for big
landings, my universals came out of the drive cups once in a while. I really like the
way the truck jumps with the shocks set up like this, so is there a way I can keep the
universals in without changing the shocks back? [email] Caleb
AAbsolutely, Caleb. When you set up a truck with a lot of suspension travel, it alters the “plunge” of the dogbone or universal driveshaft. Plunge describes where the end
of the universal is inside the output drive cup of the transmission when the suspension is
fully compressed and fully unloaded. It sounds like your universals are coming out from
the drive cups a little too far when the suspension is unloaded. The easy remedy for that is
to install some shims on the axle end of the universal, and then install the universal back
into your rear hub so that the shims are between the inside hub bearing and the flange on
the universal axle. This holds the universal farther into the drive cup when the suspension
is unloaded, and keeps them from being thrown. Just make sure you don’t use so many
shims that the universal binds into the back of the drive cup at full compression.
