Short Course Newz
If you’re stuck on your side, turn toward the ground and grab full throttle.
Crashes happen, no matter how good you are. But, if you can
recover from that crash quickly, you can make up time on the
other guys while they wait for the corner marshal to stop
texting his buddy or put his Twinkie down. Facing a wall? The
bodies and bumpers on short course trucks are fairly soft and
have a spring-like effect when you press on them. Use that
to your advantage and goose the throttle to bump your truck
into the wall that you’re stuck against and watch it bounce off.
Sometimes a short course truck crash will stay on its flat side.
If this happens, quickly turn the front tires towards the ground
and blip the throttle; your truck will often land back right back
on its tires. Keep in mind that you should never be on the
throttle while a corner marshal is attempting to flip your car or
even reaching for it.
Be a smooth operator
Two things separate the fast guys from the show guys: the fast
guys don’t crash and they don’t overshoot turns. First, slow
down until you can run an entire race without crashing on your
own. If someone hits you, that’s one thing, but you should be
able to run an entire race without crashing. If you can’t, you
simply need to slow down. Second, stop overshooting turns. A
properly executed turn starts before you get to the apex. When
you go flying into a corner, you practically slide to a stop and
have to mash the gas to get moving again. This is not the fast
way around a track. Brake or coast into a corner and smoothly
accelerate out. Do what full-size road course drivers almost
always do and find visual markers to indicate where you need to
let off the throttle or hit the brakes. It can be a track banner or a
mark on the barrier.
Coast or brake before entering a corner.
