WHAT A BAJA!
I was flipping through the May issue of RC
Car Action and came across the Project
HPI Baja 5SC. I own an HPI Baja 5T and
would like to make some of the modifications made on your project to my truck.
One thing I see on that project truck that
I don’t have are the
To quickly dry it, I simply put a fan in front
of it and before you know it, all the water
was gone. You can find the parts list from
my project on my blog at RCCarAction.

What do you
think about the
rerelease of the
Tamiya Bruiser?
I’ve got a few buddies of mine
who are really into RC and
I’m considering getting into
the hobby as well but I don’t
know whether to get nitro
or electric. ;e nitro cars
seem easier to keep going
for longer periods of time
because all you have to do
is a quick refuel and you’re
still driving but I have no
idea on how to tune a
nitro engine. ;e electric
cars seem to be pretty
easy because all you do
is plug in a battery and drive. ;e down-
side is charging seems to take a very long
time and I’m not sure how many battery
packs I should buy. —George
I think it’s cool! Since
they are rereleasing
back-then kits, they
should bring back the
Nissan King Cab as well.

George, making the decision between
electric or nitro is a time-old question. ;e
main question you need to ask yourself,
what are your friends driving? If they’re
driving nitro cars, you may want to consider getting a nitro vehicle so if you have
questions or need help, they’ll be there for
support. Since you’re new to the hobby,
I’d suggest getting an electric vehicle.
Today’s brushless motor systems and
LiPo batteries make electric vehicles so
easy to operate and run times can exceed
just about any nitro vehicle. Charging the
batteries isn’t such a big deal because
most packs can be charged at a 2C rate of
higher. Meaning, if you have a 5000mAh
battery, you can charge at 10amps instead
of the 1C rate of 5amps. Make sure the
battery you choose can take that kind of
amperage. Armed with two 5000mAh
batteries and a 10-amp charger, you could
be running all day long without any delays
or having to worry about the tune of an
engine. –John

;e rear hubs and dogbones will work on
your 5T, Tom. ;e hubs are a direct fit and
super easy to install. When changing over
to the larger dogbones, remember that
you have to install new drive cups on the
di;s and hubs to be able to fit the new
larger ends of those dogbones. ;is is a
time-consuming process because you
have to remove the transmission to get to
the di;erential then have to bust out the
di; to be able to pull it apart. When you’re
ready to put the di; back together, try
filling it with a thicker di; fluid than stock
to help reduce any di;ng out when you
hammer it hard into the turns. I like to use
3,000 in my trucks and it seems to be a
good starting spot. As for the body, it will
fit the Baja 5T but you’ll have to extend
the side body mounts a bit in order to
make contact with the sides of the body.
Cleaning it is easier than you think. I just
sprayed the entire truck down with Simple
Green and let it sit for a little while before
spraying it down with water from a hose.

I’ve been an avid reader of RC Car Action for quite some time now and recently came across something that made me
take a second glance. Some of the vehicles you drive do not have antenna tubes sticking out of the body, why is that?
I know that some of the 2.4GHz radio systems have di;erent length antenna wires but does it a;ect the radio signal
by running it underneath the body. —Todd
Many times we do our best to conceal the antenna wires in order to get a much cleaner and scale appearance out of
the vehicle. Having an antenna wire sticking up out of the body tends to eliminate that look. Many times we’ll find a
way to bend the antenna tube or strap it down via a zip-tie or tape in order to hold it down underneath the body. ;is is
only done during photo shoots because the vehicle is generally no further then 40 feet away from us. When the shoot
is over and we want to extend the driving range, we’ll extend the antenna tube through the body in order to get the
added range from the radio system. Today’s 2.4GHz radio systems are quite powerful and a Lexan body shouldn’t a;ect
your signal, but it’s always better to error on the caution side of things so let the antenna wire extend out from the
body for a cleaner radio signal. If you’re looking to be di;erent, try getting a di;erent-colored antenna tube. —John
