Our Common Bond
not even the pressure of racing for a
world championship can break the
bond between rc racers when attending the trophy banquet – though the
wine cellar in the background could
certainly help.
Hey tHere, friends. It’s good to see you huddled around another month’s collection of
our printerized, posterized, digitized, You Tuberized, sarcasterized, bound and trimmed,
photochopped media mishmash. This is what we do, no matter which hurricane, “nor’easter,”
flood, or illness cometh our way, and let’s be honest … we’ve been humbled by all of the above
this winter. Still, when it comes down to it, we play with toy cars, and dammit, all of the ensuing
mayhem, durability results, and entertainment value that’s captured on film and video during
the month is our gift to you, all for only few dollars per issue. It’s about more than just the cars
we review. We present our magazine with the glowing pride of a second grader holding up her
freshest piece of abstract finger-painting art. Multicolored fingers and all.
This month has been an interesting one for me personally, as I’ve been a bit under the
weather. During this period, RC has provided me with a support group that has literally
delivered food, offered the shirts off their backs, texted and called, and lifted my spirits.
This story isn’t about me, but rather it’s about the incredibly diverse group of RC’ers who’ve
become an RC family. I find myself tearing up occasionally at their generosity. And the only
true common bond we all share? The radio-controlled toy car. I’ve sung the praises of club
racing for many years, but never did
I believe these friends would become
heroes of mine. Spend some time at
your local track, create a few lasting
friendships, and you’ll see what I mean.
Radio control is the common hobby we
share, but it’s the generosity of spirit,
kindness, and camaraderie that truly
binds us together like the hilariously
dysfunctional, loving family we are.
To my Hot Rod local friends who took this photo, thank you. You’ve proven it’s about more
than just the car. I can only hope others are as fortunate with their friends as I.
