Yes, they definitely are harmed by cold weather as well; any battery really, but especially LiPos due to their delicate chemistry. ;e way it works is that your LiPo packs produce energy from a chemical reaction. As with any sort of chemicals interacting, the reaction will speed up when heat is ap- plied (which is why they can rupture if left in the trunk of your car) or slow down when cooled. If your packs are left out or even
run in freezing weather a couple things
could happen. First, the reaction needed
to produce electricity will be slowed down
which will result in a decrease in performance. Also, the chemicals inside the pack
can actually freeze and crystalize in cold
storage which will permanently damage
the pack. Your best bet is to put them in a
LiPo-safe bag and store them in a warm
part of the house for the winter, even your
basement would be better than out in the
garage. -Erich
LIPO CARE
You mentioned in the January
issue’s article about LiPo care
that LiPo batteries should
not be stored in high-heat
areas. Check! But with winter
coming up, how do they fare
in extreme cold? If the garage
gets into the low 20s, would
the hard freeze damage them?

THE AGE;OLD QUES TION
I have been thinking of buying an
RC monster truck, and have been
getting info on a few that I’m
interested in. ;ey are all about
the same size and cost. One is
4 WD, one is 4 WD and 4 WS, and
one is an awesome scale-looking
truck but only 2 WD. My question
is, which of these is the best for
me? -Craig

I was wondering if you have ever produced
a book with all the “Pit Tips” from the
magazine over the years? ;ey’re always
really handy and it would make a great
read. – John
Craig, but certainly a question we
get asked all the time and one with a
simple answer— get all three! Seriously
though, they’re all going to be fun to drive
but here’s a few pointers to keep in mind
when you make your final decision. A
truck from a brand that’s been around for
a long time and has a lot of development
into their vehicles is going to be the most
reliable and give you the best performance. Also you want to look for a vehicle
that has parts support in your area. Yes,
you can order parts online, but in a pinch
you need something, it’s nice to have a
hobby shop nearby with parts. Make sure
your choice also has a lot of aftermarket
support for when you want to upgrade it.
Any of your choices may be a lot of fun
to drive and very reliable vehicles, but for
me at least, it goes to the one your more
likely to get parts for when/if something
breaks. Good luck! -Erich
A truck such as this has
never been built before.

A CHALLENGE
As a driver in the Monster Jam Series, I’m always hearing how great RC cars are, how
fast they go, and how much power they can handle. Well, I’m here to challenge you to
a race — real full-size Monster Jam horsepower served up Grinder-style vs. your tiny
little toys. You guys think your cars are so big and bad, let’s see what you’ve got. You
name the time and place and we’ll see just who has the better truck. – John Seasock
Well, John, I’ve seen you and Grinder in action and while I’ll say you’re pretty quick, I think
you might be a little too quick for your own good. I think my RC trucks can take you
down anytime, anywhere. How about we race at a Monster Jam event in front of all those
people so I can show them just who’ll be “Roof Walking” into victory lane? ;e gauntlet
