How important is the rental program to the
track’s success?
KC: ;e rental program is definitely one of the
most important aspects of the RC business.
;e majority, if not all, of our regular
customers already have their own trucks
and equipment, but one of our biggest goals
is exposing new customers to the potential
of RC, and our rental trucks allow that by
o;ering essentially a “test run” at a decent
price. In fact, with a rental Traxxas truck on
display in our main lobby, there are many
kart racers who are swayed into trying RC.
How well have Sunday club races at Unser
Racing been received among the local competitors? Do you attract regular turnouts from
racers outside the immediate area?
KC: ;e race series are the most exciting part
of the RC division. In fact, we have such a
strong and loyal following, that we refer to the
community as “Unser Underground.” Most of
the regulars know one another very well, and
our Unser Underground Facebook page helps
coordinate and develop that community even
further. With races on Tuesdays, Fridays, as
well as Sundays, we receive a regular turnout
of 50+ people per race. Our most recent
special race series, the Hobby Town Winter
Series, went extremely well, and we are just
starting to get into the swing of our Spring
Series now.
Unser Racing held an RC Supercross earlier
this year as the facility’s first “big race,” which
drew some very fast regional racers including
former National Champion Dustin Evans. Was it
always a plan to host large events at the track?
KC: Creating large events such as the
Supercross Series was an idea that came
about when we realized how strong the RC
community is. We wanted to add excitement
for our customers, something that would be
fun for our regulars but would also gather
interest from new racers. ;e Supercross race
was inspired by the West Coast R/C SX Race
Series. We took it a step further and decided
to add a drop gate for an authentic touch
of Supercross excitement, as well as an RC
motocross bike prize.
Isn’t that beautiful? With an infield lined with astroturf, elevation changes clearly marked with white paint, and an expertly manicured surface, the track at Unser Racing is a work of art.
After a hard day of battling on the track,
racers can resort to the Trackside Tavern,
a full-service bar and restaurant.
What is the future of the RC portion of the
Unser Racing facility? Do those plans include
hosting more of these larger marquee events?
KC: We would love to be known for hosting
a variety of themed races. Our RC customer
base is constantly growing and our track is
big enough that trade sponsorships would be
mutually beneficial. We are also starting to
plan larger events, such as the Short Course
Showdown on September 13-14 later this
year. ;e race will feature our regular format
but with a turnout of about 250-300 entries
from all over the nation.
