Keep the labeled parts bags sealed
and in order until the owner’s manual
instructs you to open them.
Squint less by making sure
that you have a bright enough light source
to keep you chugging along during the build.
Almost any lamp will do, but one that lets you
aim the light is best. If you need to shop for a
lamp, the brighter, the better—and having an
adjustable arm is a plus. While you’re at it, pick
up a fluorescent bulb. ;e white light it puts
out makes it easier to see any black plastic
parts and puts less strain on the eyes.

ONE BAG AT
RC car companies have been
in the business of making kits
for years and have only made
it simpler for hobbyists to build
their cars correctly and easily.
Kits are designed to have a
labeled bag opened when called
for by a corresponding step in
the manual. ;e worse thing that
you can do—as I did on my first
kit build when I was 10—was to
open all the parts bags and dump
everything out into a big pile. Be
patient, and go step by step and
bag by bag.
STEP 3. READ
When you first crack open the
box of a new kit, one of the
first things you should do is
immediately reach for the
manual and study it. It’s better
to take your pen and write some
notes in the manual about a
critical build step than to have to
disassemble the car because
you made a build mistake earlier.
Give the whole manual a complete read-through, and make
notes on steps that require special attention that you don’t want
Use a bright marker to write notes on
vital steps in the build process so that
you don’t miss anything important.
