NORMAL AXLE PORTAL AXLE
Traxxas TRX- 4
Land Rover Defender
WHY IT WON
The Traxxas guys took their time before joining the “scale & trail” scene, but no
one can argue they weren’t paying attention. Case in point, of course, is the TRX-4:
a backboard-shattering slam dunk that no one expected from “the fastest name in
radio control.” In what can only be described as the furthest thing possible from a
“me-too” truck, Traxxas pulled out all the stops to deliver an innovative, exciting take
on what a solid-axle trail machine should be. The biggest standouts in the TRX- 4’s
deep well of features are in the drivetrain department, where the TRX- 4 gets three
major upgrades over the typical trail runner. The first is the radio-operated High/Low
transmission, which is not a first for the TRX- 4 but is important because it’s standard
equipment; other 2-speed gearboxes we’ve seen have been optional, or standard only
on kit versions of a single-speed RTR. Where the TRX- 4 truly breaks away is in the axle
department, with portal axles offered as standard equipment for the first time in an
RC trail rig. And inside the axle is the TRX- 4’s other massive blow to the “scale & trail”
status quo: remote-locking differentials. Using the same T-Lock tech proven in the
Traxxas Summit, you can lock and unlock the TRX- 4’s front and rear differentials on
command. T-rick. And we haven’t even mentioned cruise control, the super-detailed
body, new trail-spec power system... These features, coupled with the
truck’s excellent performance and reasonable price, make the TRX- 4
an easy pick for Truck of the Year.
;e TRX- 4 is like other 1/10-scale trail
trucks only in the broadest strokes. Look
closer and it departs significantly from
other rigs in its features and details.
;ere’s nothing else like it on the trail.
Portal axles are the TRX- 4’s signature
feature. ;e drop-down stub axles improve
ground clearance, and the extra gearing
virtually eliminates torque twist.
Originally developed for the Summit, Traxxas’ T-Lock di;erentials
can be locked and unlocked from
the transmitter as you drive.
